note: This piece was originally called And There is Always (Sadness and Longing) but this never seemed to sit well with me; it seemed too prescriptive. Its current title comes from an email exchange I had a few years ago with a Chicago based artist, Yuri Shin, whose work touched me somehow. When I emailed Yuri to express gratitude for the better mood her paintings had put me in, she replied saying, “Thank you. But remember: sadness is a gift too.” and I knew that phrase would burn into my heart and stay with me forever. It has found a home as the new title for this piece, and I hope you will see why.
